How does pet euthanasia work? What should I expect? How do I prepare for euthanasia?

Pet euthanasia is an overdose of highly concentrated anesthesia that is specially made for euthanasia. A relaxing, falling asleep feeling is what your pet experiences. First, a calming sedative is given in the vein through an IV catheter. Peaceful relaxation and full unconsciousness set in over 1-2 minutes. Next, the final injection is given. As the euthanasia solution overwhelms the brain and shuts it off.

The breathing quickens in response to no brain activity. The breathing then stops within 15-20 seconds, followed by the heart slowing and stopping over 1-2 minutes. Faster breathing (due to no brain activity) is the primary change to expect. You may also see that the eyes remain

slightly open, the skin may twitch, and the tongue may relax out. Occasionally, there are one to two sudden deep breaths that may occur. Home visits typically last 20-30 minutes. However, some visits may last longer depending on the type of appointment that is scheduled.

Things to do ahead of time:

Set aside a large dry towel or blanket to place under your pet. Some pets may loose control of their bowels and urine after transitioning.

Any special location is appropriate: The backyard, couch, bedroom, living room, etc. Wherever is most comfortable for you and your pet will be accommodated.
